Beyond the Label

Romania may not be the world’s best-known wine producer, but it has a long tradition of making wines for European royal courts, and boasts “some of Europe’s greatest cool climate vineyards,” says World Atlas of Wine author Hugh Johnson. Our intrepid Eastern Europe expert, Becca, is passionate about this burgeoning region, and she’s excited for you to try this exhilarating Sauvignon Blanc. It’s brought to you by the talented Lorena Deaconu, and (here’s a fun dinner party fact) was crafted in the mountains of the legendary Transylvania region.

Forget vampires and Count Dracula—Transylvania’s vineyards are perched at flavor-boosting high altitudes, with a cooling influence from nearby rivers and typically long, slow ripening seasons. “We’re confident our macroclimate is perfect for Sauvignon,” says Lorena, of the vineyards where she sourced the fruit for this wine. They’ve been replanted (and improved) over time, but these prime plots have a history that dates to the 13th century.

In the glass, look forward to fragrant tropical and citrus fruit aromas, with floral accents. Mango, grapefruit, melon, and tangerine flavors are supported by refreshing acidity. With its appealing freshness, this is a great white to sip solo. It also makes an exciting alternative to New World Sauvignon Blancs from California or Chile, and will do equally well at any dinner party or backyard cookout. Enjoy well-chilled, with salads, seafood or chicken kebabs, grilled fish, and more.
